Carcassonne is a small city, and the difference between a good visit and a great one often comes down to whether your base is comfortable, well-placed, and run by people who actually want you to have a good time. On all three counts, 45BB delivers.
You’ll find it at 45 Boulevard Barbès, right in the Bastide Saint-Louis – the grid-pattern “new town” down by the river, which despite the name has been around since the 13th century. This is where locals shop, eat, and go about their day, and it’s a far more relaxed place to wake up than the tourist crush inside the walls. The medieval Cité is still close: a walk of roughly 15 minutes that takes you across the river with one of the best views of the fortress you’ll get anywhere.
The house itself is a 19th century building that’s been done up with real care. From the street it’s understated, but step inside and it’s all calm, comfortable, boutique feeling spaces. Rooms come with air conditioning, comfy beds, private bathrooms with walk-in showers, a kettle and coffee, a flat-screen TV, and free Wi-Fi. Some have a balcony or look out over the garden and pool. And yes, there’s a seasonal outdoor swimming pool, which in the Occitanie summer heat is a luxury.
Breakfast is a highlight rather than an afterthought. Expect a generous spread: fresh pastries and bread, fruit, cheeses and cold meats, jams, cereals, yoghurt, and proper coffee, tea, and juice. There’s also a little honour-system stash of drinks and snacks in the breakfast room, which is exactly the kind of low-key thoughtfulness that defines the place.
That thoughtfulness comes straight from the hosts, Sadie and Joachim. Guests rave about the warm welcome and the genuinely useful local tips – where to eat, what to see and what’s worth your time on a short stay. People leave feeling looked after, which is the whole point of a good B&B.
Good to know: 45BB is adults-only, so it’s geared toward couples and grown-up getaways rather than family trips. Pets aren’t accepted. Carcassonne Salvaza Airport is about 5 km away, and the property can arrange a paid airport shuttle.
