Le Païchérou is nestled right on the picturesque banks of the River Aude in Carcassonne. This beloved local institution captures the very essence of a traditional French guinguette – a lively open-air café and restaurant where good times are practically guaranteed. As their own motto perfectly puts it: “On y vient pour manger, on y reste pour danser !” (We come to eat, we stay to dance!).
The terrace is situated under century-old trees, beautifully decorated with fairy lights that create a magical, romantic atmosphere as evening falls. After the busy summer you will find it a lovely quiet and peaceful place to meet with friends and have a glass of wine or in the morning grab a coffee and read a book.
The staff are always attentive and the food hits all the right notes from wood-fired grillades, succulent steaks, fresh Mediterranean-inspired dishes, and irresistible desserts like their signature parfait. Païchérou is a place that manages to be both cozy and vibrant at the same time.

Whether you’re stopping by for a casual apéro in the shade or a full evening out, the bar certainly does not disappoint. They offer a large and varied selection of drinks to suit every palate, including some refreshingly cold beers on tap.
However, if you want a true taste of the South of France, you absolutely must try Les Sardines, which is hands down our favorite Rosé to drink there. Crisp, refreshing, and perfectly balanced, it pairs beautifully with their tapas, warm summer days, and the tranquility under the plane trees.
Sunday Afternoons: Live Music and Dancing
Le Païchérou is a place of many moods, but it truly comes alive on the weekends. One of the absolute highlights that you cannot miss is their Sunday afternoon bal. It has been a tradition here on this spot in Carcassonne since the 1950s with many many weddings and parties and events being celebrated on the huge terrace dance floor. A huge crowd of the older generations come to dance here every Sunday.
Following a long, lazy lunch, the venue’s spacious 250m² shaded outdoor dance floor fills up as live music takes over. It is usually a traditional local musette as the Sunday afternoon dancing is a joyful affair. You can jump up and join in on a waltz or a tango, or simply sit back with a cold drink and enjoy the dancing.

Opening Hours: Open from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM every day, except Monday (Closed).
Kids are welcome – during the summer they have an outside corner with some games to play. We think it is the perfect safe location for families to dine.
Dogs are welcome on a leash.
Good to Know: It is highly recommended to book a table in advance if you plan to visit on a sunny Sunday afternoon or for any of their events!
