Lac de la Cavayere Swimming 2025

Swimming Lac de la Cavayere 2025

Every year there is some confusion over whether swimming is allowed at Lac de la Cavayere, the largest lake in the Carcassonne area offering watersports and swimming.

The City of Carcassonne services visited Lac de la Cavayère and noted a historically low water level that will prevent the City from ensuring the safety of swimmers on its beaches during public swimming this summer.

The impact of the falling water level has three major drawbacks:

  • On the gravel beach facing the water sports center, the water level pushes swimmers directly into piles of seaweed that would normally be found at great depths. On the so-called “sand” beach, the lower water level prevents the installation of a “small swimming area” for children.
  • Common to both beaches the lake’s swimming areas are prone to the phenomenon of turbidity (the water becomes cloudy due to the rise of silt caused by swimmers trampling)
  • With the arrival of the summer heat and the increase in water temperature, these three phenomena (algae blooms, falling water levels, and turbidity problems) will intensify.

All of these factors represent too great a risk, leading the City to issue a ban on swimming on the beaches. To ensure compliance with the ban on swimming on the lake’s beaches, the City’s lifeguards will be on site throughout the summer.

The entire site is, however, open to the public (water sports and recreational activities offered by the lake’s private service providers remain open to the public, as does the on-site restaurant). The merchants and operators extend a warm welcome to you.

You can enjoy the Teleski, paddleboarding, inflatable park and O2 adventure park as well as the walks and picnic areas.
